Take it in Stages

One of the things that we like to tell ambitious athletes is we didn’t become a Toronto Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in one day. What we mean here is no one gets to the end goal in one 24-hour period.

When you’re an athlete, there’s no need to try and push consistently until you hurt yourself. It’s a much better idea to pace yourself and scale back your exercise routines a little if you start to feel a lot of heel or back pain. That’s probably just your body telling you that it’s going to take a little bit more time than you had planned to get in shape.

We also recommend that it’s a good idea to take a little more time choosing your shoes. Even if you’re a casual athlete who thinks that the sneakers you bought at the local Walmart will do, we’d suggest you take a different perspective.

There are different athletic shoes made for specific sports. For example, if you take the time to do a little research, you’ll see different shoes are made for specific events. If you’re planning on running a marathon, every day running shoes won’t give you support in your arches that you might need.

On the other side of that coin, basketball specific sneakers have great ankle support that will cover you for all the running and jumping that you’ll need to do.

One of the other pieces of advice that we give out on a regular basis is sometimes you just need to rest. Most athletes like to power through the pain, but that’s not always the best way to get the most from your body.
